PRO-ACTING

PRO-ACTING

The PRO-ACTING project is part of a global partnership against food crises (Global Network Against Food Crisis-GFNAC) between the European Union and the FAO in which investments in ten countries (including Madagascar) are conducted.

Goals

The project aims to improve the resilience of vulnerable communities and households in the Great South of Madagascar to food crises by strengthening and securing the livelihoods of the most vulnerable local communities and households in the intervention areas to prevent and/or mitigate the effects of hazards and ensure their food and nutritional security.

Expected results

The following three results have been set:

(i) the livelihoods of target households and their capacity to adapt to the effects of climatic hazards and foreseeable shocks in the agricultural sector are strengthened in the short, medium and long term;

(ii) early intervention mechanisms to prevent and/or mitigate the effects of hazards are strengthened;

and (iii) good practices and successful approaches to the resilience of agricultural and food systems are documented, capitalized on and disseminated to serve as a solid basis for their promotion on a larger scale.

The project activities were designed around 3 axes:

• Diversification of agricultural food production and sources of income through the promotion of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (ASN) and social protection

• Reinforcement of early intervention systems to prevent and/or mitigate the effects of hazards

• Knowledge sharing for scaling up/sustaining the action.

The total number of project participants (beneficiaries) is 10,624 households distributed in 7 Districts in the South zone (7,586 households): Amboasary Atsimo, Ambovombe, Tsihombe, Beloha, Bekily; and 2 Districts in the South-East (3,038 households): Farafangana, Vangaindrano. This is a pilot project which, once completed, will make it possible to draw lessons learned and conclusions on the types of responses adapted for or in anticipation of any hazard/shock affecting the agricultural sector with a view to strengthening the resilience of households and communities repeatedly exposed to food insecurity problems.
