The Itasy Region, located south of Antananarivo, is an agricultural region where rice cultivation is predominant. The proximity to the capital allows producers to take advantage of a large sales market and structured collection networks for agricultural products. Although partly located in a volcanic zone with relatively rich soils, the agricultural areas are highly degraded, frequent erosions and the forest massifs constantly disappearing. Agricultural production systems are now in decline and need to evolve in order to survive.
The project aims to assess the impact on climate change of agroecological and forestry practices implemented with a view to imagining new mechanisms for financing sustainable agricultural practices through "carbon markets".
R1. Fight against climate change by reducing GHG emissions from agricultural practices and storing carbon in soils and forest biomass
R2. The agro-ecological component aims to restore the local environment and adopt efficient and sustainable agricultural practices.
A3. The carbon component aims to assess the impact of these actions on mitigating climate change
R4. Improved food security
R5. Improvement and diversification of farmers' incomes in the medium and long term
Agrisud International
Agrisud promotes economic recovery through the creation of very small family businesses (TPE), particularly in the agricultural sector. These VSEs are viable and sustainable, because they are economical and agro-ecological, because they are well anchored in the local market.
