PADPP3

This project aims to establish the conditions for the sustainability and dissemination of sustainable fish farming accessible to small family farms, allowing them to improve their living conditions. Fish is a resource that is becoming scarce in Madagascar and the selling price of which generates a significant income even on a small scale.

On the Hauts-Plateaux, carp-based rice-fish farming is the most widespread because it is better adapted to the local context. The development of carp reproduction practices ensures the supply of fingerlings even in remote areas.

On the east coast, where agriculture is oriented towards production intended for export, the development of ponds for fish farming makes it possible to diversify production and provide a source of local protein.

The project intends to support local dynamics of farmer exchanges to improve practices, disseminate fish farming on a large scale and strengthen interprofessional dialogue.

Goals

APDRA and its partners are working to revitalize processes for disseminating and improving fish farming practices while supporting the structuring of a sector that will be able to support local initiatives for the development of fish farming.

Expected results

  • Networks of farmers are engaged in local processes to improve practices and disseminate fish farming know-how
  • The networking of farmers in local processes to improve practices facilitates the adoption of fish farming
  • The technical and breeding management skills of fish farmers are strengthened to achieve a more efficient and attractive level of production
  • Cross-industry dialogue helps strengthen the farmed fish value chain
