Financed by the European Union under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), the Aina Program is part of the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG-c1) which is to "contribute to the reduction of the proportion of vulnerable families who suffer from hunger”. Its total budget amounts to €12.5 million for an initial period of 36 months on the date of signature between the EU and the FAO (07/05/2013) which is responsible for its management. Implementation in the field is ensured by a consortium made up of three United Nations agencies (FAO itself, IFAD and WFP) and five NGOs active in the country (AIM, CARE, GRET, ICCO, WHH).
The main stated objective of the AINA Program is to “contribute to the reduction of the proportion of vulnerable families who suffer from hunger” consistent with MDG1c. The specific objective is to “improve the food security of vulnerable families in the targeted areas of southern and southeastern Madagascar” by acting on the three pillars of food security, including (i) food availability; (ii) access to food; and (iii) utilization, and particularly the nutritional adequacy of food intake.
- Result 1: Food crop production is significantly increased and diversified through the production and distribution of quality seeds and plant material, adapted to agro-ecological conditions; crop diversification; the popularization of more productive and adapted farming techniques, and the extension of cultivated areas by improving access to water and water management.
Result 2: Food availability and accessibility of the most vulnerable households are secured by reducing agricultural losses related to storage, developing the value chain of agricultural products, and improving the physical and monetary accessibility of food recipients.
- Result 3: Nutritional and hygiene practices are improved thanks to the popularization of good practices among pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under five; the promotion and monitoring of the growth of children under five, and the strengthening of information systems and communal nutritional monitoring.
